E2! delves into the world of a legendary artist celebrated for his distinct, timeless creations
Poosapati Parameshwar Raju has been a cornerstone of Indian calligraphy for over 40 years, leaving a lasting legacy in the art world. His journey, chronicled in his book The Wonderful Calligraphy of Poosapati Parameshwar Raju, showcases his artistic evolution from traditional Devanagari script to his unique pictorial calligraphy. This book not only displays his mastery but also explores his deep-rooted connection to Indian iconography, mythology, and symbolism.
Collaborating closely with art historian and curator Koeli Mukherjee Ghose, Raju’s work has been interwoven with narratives that add profound layers to each piece. Ghose’s expertise in Indian symbolism has significantly enriched this partnership, resulting in a book that combines Raju's artistic brilliance with historical and cultural depth.
A JOURNEY THROUGH ART AND INNOVATION
Reflecting on the creation of the book, Raju explains that it originated as a way to commemorate his 40-year career in calligraphy. “I wanted to show how ancient iconography and symbolism can be reimagined through a modern lens,” he shares. “I also felt my work could contribute to the ongoing dialogue on the fusion of tradition and innovation in art."
Raju’s signature minimalist style—characterized by a rhythmic ‘thin-thick-thin’ line approach—has allowed him to distil complex symbols while retaining their significance. His use of red in his artwork, symbolizing Shakti or feminine energy, adds a profound spiritual layer to his calligraphy.
Discussing the evolution of his art, Raju remarks, “My work has become more introspective and layered over the years. Initially, I focused on perfecting form and technique, but gradually, I began to integrate symbolism from Indian mythology, Puranas, and ancient scriptures. My calligraphy transitioned from script-based forms to a storytelling art.”
TRADITION AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
The book itself was two years in the making, involving the careful selection and curation of four decades’ worth of work. Raju credits Ghose for her role in refining the presentation of each piece. “Her insights into iconography and mythology were essential to shaping the final narrative,” he notes. Ghose’s thorough understanding of Indian cultural traditions added intellectual depth, transforming the book into both a visual and an intellectual journey through calligraphy.
While traditional calligraphy may not be widely practiced today, Raju sees a revival of interest, especially as modern artists experiment with it in new ways. “There’s an increasing appreciation for how calligraphy can merge with visual art to create narratives,” he observes.
For Raju, the inspiration behind his work is deeply rooted in India’s ceremonial culture, mythology, and sacred texts. He concludes, “The storytelling traditions passed down through generations, especially by my grandfather, have profoundly influenced my sense of narrative and symbolism. Each piece I create is a modern exploration of these ancient traditions, viewed through a minimalist lens.”
