The Indian Photo Festival (IPF) returned in 2024 at the State Art Gallery and is on till January 15, 2025, offering an unparalleled celebration of photography from around the world. Aquin Matthews, the Festival Director, highlights the ethos of the event, “Since our inception in 2015, the Indian Photo Festival has evolved significantly, embodying our mission to bring art to the public. We've hosted exhibitions in accessible spaces like KBR Park, Durgam Cheruvu Lake, metro stations, airports, and malls, ensuring that everyone can engage with photography. Our pioneering mobile exhibition gallery travels to communities, colleges, and schools, allowing those who may not visit traditional galleries to experience art firsthand.”

The festival blends print and digital exhibitions to broaden accessibility further. It also boasts a stellar line-up of contributors, including Frans Lanting, celebrated by National Geographic as one of the great photographers of our time, and other international artists like Antonio Aragón Renuncio, Pablo Albarenga, and Sujata Setia. Together, their works promise to span continents and cultures, offering a richly diverse experience.

VOICES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Clara Watt, a Senegalese-Canadian documentary photographer, shares, “I am excited to showcase my work at the Indian Photo Festival. The series I present documents the passing of an anti-LGBTQ bill in Ghana. Through portraits and collages, I hoped to draw global attention to human rights violations and advocate for social change and the protection of LGBTQ communities in Ghana and beyond.”

The festival will also honour the late Navroze Contractor with a retrospective exhibition titled Photography Strictly Prohibited. In addition, attendees can look forward to a masterclass with Magnum photographer Matt Black, providing invaluable insights into crafting compelling visual narratives.

A TREAT FOR THE SENSES

Indrajit Khambe

Another highlight is the work of Indrajit Khambe, whose series The Morning in the Home Garden captures the essence of childhood amid the natural beauty of Sindhudurg. “My work focuses on my children, their upbringing, and the documentation of their childhood amidst the serene landscapes of Sindhudurg. I began my photographic journey in 2012 with the arrival of my daughter, and now I capture the shared experiences of my children in the same landscapes I once explored, reliving my childhood through every precious moment,” Khambe shares.

Hyderabad, with its rich cultural heritage, serves as an ideal backdrop for the festival. Workshops, screenings, and interactive sessions offer attendees an immersive experience and the chance to engage directly with professionals.

Reflecting on the festival’s growth, Aquin Matthews notes, “We have embraced the digital format, offering many programs online, thus reaching a wider audience. Collaborations that matter, such as our partnership with National Geographic for workshops and portfolio reviews, have enriched the photographic community tremendously. Surviving a decade, especially after the challenges of the pandemic, is a significant achievement.”
