Naisha Bajaj

Two of Telangana’s brightest sporting talents, Naisha Bajaj and Harsha Ratnakar, have made a heartfelt appeal to the government for recognition of kickboxing as an official sport in the state. Both athletes, international-level kickboxers with an impressive track record of achievements, have faced significant challenges due to the lack of support and inclusion of their sport in government policies.

Their Achievements Speak for Themselves

Naisha Bajaj, a dedicated athlete with numerous accolades, has consistently brought glory to the state and the nation. Her achievements include:

- Gold Medals at the 2024 National Kickboxing Championship (Goa) and Khelo India Women’s Kickboxing League (Hyderabad).

- Gold Medals at multiple Telangana State Kickboxing Championships.

- Gold at the 3rd Indian International Kickboxing Championship (2024, New Delhi).

Harsha Ratnakar

Harsha Ratnakar has also made a significant mark in the sport:

- Gold Medal at the 2015 National Kickboxing Championship (New Delhi).

- Medals at several Indian International Kickboxing Championships and Telangana State Championships.

Despite their success, the absence of recognition for kickboxing in Telangana’s official sports list has left them without vital government support.

The Issue: Outdated Policies and Exclusion

The Government of Telangana continues to operate under G.O. M.S. No. 74, introduced in 2012, which provides 2% reservation for athletes in government jobs and benefits. However, this order has not been updated in over 12 years and does not include kickboxing among the 28 recognised sports. As a result, kickboxers like Naisha and Harsha are excluded from sports quotas, government sponsorships, and other benefits critical for advancing their careers.

Naisha and Harsha, along with over 500 active kickboxers in Telangana, submitted a formal appeal with supporting documents to the Sports Authority of Telangana six months ago. Unfortunately, their request remains unaddressed.

A Call for Action

“We have consistently represented Telangana and India with pride and achieved remarkable success, yet we are denied the opportunities and recognition given to athletes in other sports,” said Naisha Bajaj. “Recognition of kickboxing would not only validate our efforts but also inspire a new generation of athletes.”

Harsha Ratnakar added, “It is disheartening to be overlooked despite proving our mettle at national and international levels. We request the government to update the outdated policies and include kickboxing in the recognised sports list.”

The Way Forward

Naisha and Harsha urge the Telangana government to review G.O. M.S. No. 74 and update it to reflect the evolving landscape of Indian sports. Recognising kickboxing would ensure fair access to government job reservations, sponsorships, and a pathway for aspiring athletes to pursue their dreams.

Their achievements are a testament to their dedication and skill. Now, they look to the state for the support they deserve.

The time for action is now – let us ensure kickboxing earns the recognition it rightfully deserves in Telangana.
