Travelling with pets doesn’t have to be a hassle—follow these tips for a smooth, enjoyable trip for you and your four-legged companion

For many of us, pets are cherished members of the family, and leaving them behind when travelling can feel heartbreaking. But with a little planning, you can enjoy a stress-free getaway together. From transport tips to keeping them calm in new surroundings, here’s how to make your next holiday pet-friendly and fun.

1. Make Your Pet Comfortable

Whether you’re travelling by car, train, or plane, ensuring your pet feels secure is key. Invest in a well-ventilated, cosy carrier that gives them enough space to sit or lie down comfortably. If possible, let them get used to it weeks before your trip—place their favourite blanket inside and reward them for spending time in it. On road trips, a pet seatbelt or harness can keep them safe, while trains and ferries often have pet-friendly areas where they can sit beside you.

2. Hydration & Food On the Go

Packing familiar food and treats helps avoid tummy upsets, while collapsible bowls make feeding and drinking easy on the move. If your pet is in a carrier, attach a spill-proof water bottle to keep them hydrated. On long drives, schedule regular breaks for toilet stops and meals—sticking to their usual routine reduces stress.

3. Keep Them Calm & Entertained

New environments can be overwhelming, so bring their favourite toys or a blanket that smells like home. Calming sprays or pheromone collars can help anxious pets, especially during flights or noisy journeys. Always supervise them in unfamiliar places, watching out for hazards like busy roads, other animals, or extreme weather.

4. Plan Ahead for a Smooth Trip

Research pet-friendly hotels, parks, and restaurants at your destination—many UK staycations and European breaks now cater brilliantly to pets. Check transport rules in advance (airlines and trains have specific pet policies), and ensure your pet’s microchip and ID tags are up to date. A quick vet visit before travelling can also confirm they’re fit for the journey.

With the right prep, you and your pet can enjoy adventures together—making memories that are worth every bit of effort. Happy travels!
